Looms and weaves of India


Handloom provides a source of livelihood for many rural communities. In India, the industry is the second-largest employer after agriculture. Remarkably, 77% of weavers are women and handlooms allow them to be economically independent and self-sufficient.

The Indian government has chosen August 7th as the National Handloom Day, with the key objective of forecasting the handloom industry and acknowledging the dedication and expertise of the weaving community. This sector’s artisans, weavers and producers have been instrumental in safeguarding the rich cultural and traditional legacy of the nation. Additionally, the occasion aims to enhance the visibility and economic well-being of craftsmen and weavers by encouraging their active participation and support. This year the nation celebrates the 9th National Handloom Day.

Department of Post Graduate Studies MBA and M. Com-FA, organized Handloom expo day on the eve of National Handloom Day. I MBA, II MBA and I M. Com-FA students participated in the expo. The day began with Vigor, Bro Anthony, Director St. Francis College, Bro. Peter Deputy Director, St. Francis College and Dr. R N Subba Rao, Principal St. Francis College inaugurated the National Handloom Expo 2023. Twelve teams participated in this handloom expo. Each team consisted of 3 team members who represented the prominent handloom states of India. The teams brought handloom fabric, silk thread, equipment, sarees, bedsheet, blouse, quilt, representing the states. each team member explained the history and facts of the fabrics of their representative states. students and faculty from different wigs of the institution visited expo. Indeed, it was a memorizing event which brought the states, culture, fabrics of India together in the St. Francis college. To enlighten the importance of preserving the handlooms, Prasidhi silks, Domlur branch put up a stall exhibiting the fabrics across the country.

Dr. Nazura, HOD Department of Masters of Computers, Ms. Annie, Assistant Professor Department of Economics and Ms. Vandana Revankar, Department of Management visited the stalls and scored the team.
